From historic retreat to  mountain lodge

Fefor Mountain Hotel has a long and rich history. Originally built as a mountain retreat at Bøsetra in 1884, the original seter building is still standing today. Today’s hotel opened in 1891 and was called Fefor Mountain Sanitorium, welcoming guests from large cities who came for the restorative effects of the fresh mountain air. The original timber buildings are still in use, and one can only imagine the secrets their walls hold!

In 1903 Fefor became the first mountain hotel in Norway to market  winter tourism, and attracted many celebrities in the early 1900’s. From 1907 to 1914 the Norwegian royal family took their winter holidays here, and the young King Olav received his first ski lessons from Karl Roll. Fridtjof Nansen was always along, and through him Sir Robert Scott was attracted to Fefor. Scott held several training camps at Fefor before his fatal South Pole expedition. In 1927 and 1928 the Dutch queen Wilhelmine lived at Fefor. Her room in the “Nystuen” was specially decorated and furnished for her,  and is still in use today.

The main part of the old hotel was designed by architect Svene, who was also responsible for the Holmenkollen Park Hotel. This makes Fefor unique among Norwegian mountain hotels.

It was probably the local farmers from  Ruste who began receiving guests at Fefor, but in 1898 the hotel was sold to cand med. (?)  Ivar Christian Bang, financed by his father-in-law, the merchant Chr. Magnus from Christiania.
